Cora Mae Bryant was born on May 1, 1926 near Oxford, Georgia. Her father was Georgia blues legend Curley Weaver. Cora Mae Bryant started singing in church at age six. Young Cora Mae Bryant spent much time with her father and learned many of his songs. Curley Weaver himself learned many songs from his mother Savannah "Dip" Shepard. Cora Mae Bryant traveled Georgia with Curley Weaver where he played on parties. Cora Mae Bryant also met Blind Willie Mctell and Buddy Moss who were her father's friends. Cora Mae Bryant continues in her father’s tradition as a blues artist and keeps his memory alive through her music. But Cora Mae Bryant also makes up own songs. She don't really "write" these songs. She says: "I don't write songs. When they come to me, I already know 'em." Cora Mae Bryant lives in Oxford, Georgia and is regarded as a local blues hero. She regularly played at Northside Tavern in Atlanta, Georgia for the past 12 years. She also appeared at various blues festivals in the U.S. Cora Mae Bryant is a blues scholar; her house is a blues museum. She can tell you everything one needs to know of the old blues. December 2005, Cora Mae Bryant suffered a stroke in her Oxford home, but she is recovering.
