Blues Search Engine: Eddy Clearwater

Born January 10, 1935, in Macon, Mississippi, Eddy Clearwater (birth name: Eddie Harrington) grew up on a steady diet of Delta blues and old-time country. After moving to Birmingham, Alabama, with his family at age 13, Eddy Clearwater began providing guitar accompaniment for various gospel groups, including the legendary Five Blind Boys of Alabama. In 1950, Eddy Clearwater left the South and moved to Chicago where he soaked up the sounds of such blues icons as Magic Sam, Luther Allison, Jimmy Reed, Otis Rush and Little Walter. Shortly thereafter, he began performing blues himself under the name Guitar Eddy while paying close attention to the rock 'n' roll jukebox hits of the day. Magic Sam became one of Eddy Clearwater's closest friends, and Eddy Clearwater was also a friend and contemporary of blues giant Freddie King. In 1957, Eddy Clearwater happened upon another of his biggest stylistic influences upon hearing Chuck Berry's Oh Baby Doll blasting from his car radio. Eddy Clearwater remained a fixture on the Chicago club scene for more than two decades before gaining international acclaim in the 1970s when he began touring Europe. His 1980 U.S. debut album, The Chief, was the first release on Chicago's Rooster Blues label. Since then, Clearwater has released a string of acclaimed albums, including the Bullseye/Rounder releases Mean Case of the Blues (1997), Cool Blues Walk (1998) and Reservation Blues (2000). Eddy Clearwater won a W.C. Handy award in 2001 for "Contemporary Blues-Male Artist of the Year" on the strength of Reservation Blues, which was nominated for "Blues Album of the Year" and "Contemporary Blues Album of the Year".
