"Funny Stuff"

The late great Larry Davis was born on Dec.4th, 1936 in Kansas City, Mo, and was raised in England, Arkansas, eventually settling in Little Rock, Arkansas. When Larry was seven years old, Larry began his career as a drummer in various blues and jazz bands. By age fifteen Larry was playing drums with a local harmonica player named Sunny Blair. He soon took up the bass and began singing and serving in the bands of both B.B King and Albert King. Though Larry's name is not in the credits he is the MC and bassist bandleader on Albert King's Live at the Fillmore West wed. and thurs. night recorded in 1968. Davis teamed up with Fenton Robinson in 1957 and scored with two minor R&B hits,Texas Flood and Angels in Houston. The former tune was the title track of blues sensation Stevie Ray Vaughn's first album. It was Albert King who converted Davis from bass to guitar in the late 60's. He since recorded for a number of labels, including B.B.King's Virgo Records. In 1981 Larry recorded his most successful album at good friend Oliver Sain's studio in St. Louis. The critically acclaimed Rooster Records album Funny Stuff won Larry a pair of Handy awards for contemporary blues album of the year and blues single of the year for 1982. Larry released I aint beggin nobody on the Pulsar label in 1987 and Sooner or Later on Bullseye in 1992. Larry move to the west coast in the early 90's. He was happily married and was gigging steadily in and around L.A. Sadly Larry passed on in 1994. A powerful and compelling blues legend! (quoted from Larry Davis' Tribute Page at myspace.com.)
