Hubert Sumlin was born on November 16, 1931 in Greenwood, Mississippi and raised in Hughes, Arkansas. He was taken by the great blues players he heard: Charlie Patton, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Lonnie Johnson, Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie McTell, and Son House. Hubert Sumlin was eight years old when he had his first guitar. As a youngster, Hubert Sumlin played with James Cotton in West Memphis, Arkansas. Hubert Sumlin moved to Chicago in 1954 to join Howlin' Wolf's band. He worked twenty-three years together with the Wolf. After Howlin' Wolf's death in 1976, Hubert Sumlin stayed in the Wolf Gang until 1980 and then started his solo career. He played with Albert King, Otis Rush, Pinetop Perkins, Willie Dixon, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, and many others. Sumlin became close friends with Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Hubert Sumlin inspired many rock artists and some of them are his biggest fans. Hubert Sumlin won four 2006 Grammy Award nominations: Album of the Year and Traditional Blues Album of the Year for About Them Shoes, Instrumentalist (guitar) of the Year, and Traditional Blues Male Artist of the Year. Hubert Sumlin is one of Rolling Stone Magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
